Certified Counselors and Hypnotherapist Advisory Committee Meeting Notes

Report on being a public guest at Certified Counselors and Hypnotherapist Advisory Committee Meeting was held on January 23rd, 2014 By Jackie Foskett, CH

This is by memory, but I was pretty focused, so I think I can say this report is accurately represented!

The following North Puget Sound area hypnotherapists attended the meeting as well as carpooled together.  Jackie Foskett, Young Seo, and  Lura LeFevere

Ray Zukowski and Howard Batie were also in attendance from the south area. There was another person, whom I never met, seated in our same area. Tim Livingston, a Certified Counselor was also present as a public guest.

All committee members were present, although the committee is still lacking 2 public members. There were 6 (maybe 7) Health Dept staff that oversee this committee, present as well.

To summarize: This meeting was an official Advisory Committee meeting that happens quarterly that focused on the agenda presented.

The items on the agenda were as follows: Rules update

Global Assessment of Functioning Tool-this has to do with how certified counselors determine how to practice within the scope of their legal practice limitations. The original “tool” that was legislated in has now been removed due to a recoding of the DSM 5 so they are looking for a new “tool”.  This may require a change in the law.

Manager Reports Focused on: Executive Director Updates Licensing stats Budget Fee Increase for certified counselors and certified advisors (this is in response to the cost of having to “credential” the counselors…loss of revenue because so many dropped out and did not go for the credentialing process…and more

Continuing ed –regarding international studies and how they can be applied to the certified counselors and certified advisors credits—a subcommittee was formed.

ByLaws were revised and reviewed….and need approval….tabled for next meeting, so members could re-read everything.

Legislative Meet Me Calls—These are weekly calls that a member sits in on to get info about other aspects of proposed or revised legislation that may somehow cross over to members of who this committee represents.  They needed a back up person to the person already committed.

Assistant Attorney General’s report-She had nothing to report on.

Public Comment: Ray Zukowski wondered why the Hypnotherapists are even in this group/committee. Answer: they’ve been lumped together for such a long time….no changes will be made (or something to that effect!) Ray also wondered why hypnotherapists have to be “registered” at all, as there are EFT’ers, coaches, and many more who are not “registered”.

No clear answer, except…since it was decided whenever to “register” the hypnotherapist and that is a law…it’s very difficult to make a case to the legislators who are up to their necks in so many other areas of law to take away such registration. It’s a protection to the public and you’d immediately get a review of what is being done to protect the public.

There is currently at least one case that is pending with a hypnotherapist who sexually abused his clients…they say if that gets headlines in the news, as did the cases with the counselors, then we could be on our way to the same “credentialing” process as the counselors ended up with. Nothing is at all being discussed about this at present time, but it behooves us to stay tuned to make sure nothing does come up. Howard Batie asked for more background checks on people wanting to be registered as a hypnotherapist to ensure better protection for the public, but it was noted that there is already a background/police/criminal check for anyone applying to get registered for a hypnotherapist.

That pretty much covered the topics of public comments.

What do thoughts think about?

More About “What DO Thoughts Think About?”
by Jack Elias

I want to share some additional perspectives about my previous blog, “What DO Thoughts Think About?”

“Thoughts think about other thoughts” is a subtle topic; it’s importance can easily be missed, and working with it can seem boring and pointless in the beginning.

In order to experience the power of this insight, the first step to is to practice noticing and watching thinking, emotions and sensations, as they are, without any motivation to improve, escape from, or stop them.

I recently had an old client share that years after I had shared this insight and practice with her, suddenly she started remembering that “her” thoughts and emotions were not “hers” — they were just thoughts and emotions. She shared how the insight just started coming up naturally and that it interrupted her involvement in fearful concerns, stress, and melodrama.

She was able to feel a refreshing sense of being present on the earth, on the spot in her body, with an awareness of freedom to move around unobstructed by the thoughts and emotions she was aware of. Instead of entrancing and absorbing her in a claustrophobic inner environment of hallucinations, they were just objects in awareness, surrounded by this refreshing free space.

You can have this experience too! Remember:

1)      “Thoughts can only think about other thoughts.” Relax, breathe, and observe.

2)      Therefore you can only think about THOUGHTS of self, about your IDEA of self. You can’t think about your actual self which is not a thought. Relax, breathe, and observe.

3)      This means the REAL You is off the hook! No blame, no shame — your story is not about you, it is about an IDEA of you. This doesn’t mean you can pretend you didn’t do or say things — activities can be judged and it’s best to be accountable for them. But these actions do not create or define your “personhood”. They just are what they are. Relax, breathe, and observe.

4)      Commentary, subconscious gossip, will come in. Just watch it, too. Here is a tip — discouragement, boredom, and irritation are all thoughts, too. Watch and notice them. Relax, breathe, and observe.

5)      Do this for just 5 minutes a day if that’s all you can manage. Practice develops the strength of your capacity to watch and notice uninterruptedly. This is the secret to experiencing the freedom that you already are. If you can’t manage 5 minutes, relax, breathe, and observe as often as you can remember to, even for just a few seconds. Set your smart phone to remind you every 30 minutes to stop then relax, breathe, and observe for 10-15 seconds. It will work for you!

6)      Give yourself the chance to realize that any dilemma-oriented thinking relating to an IDEA of self does not prohibit your right to relax into a kind, encouraging self-regard and self-respect.

7)      The more kindness and self-respect you have, the more fearlessly you are accountable for your actions. This kindness, respect, and fearless accountability makes it easy to welcome and respect others and to enjoy collaborating with them at work, at play, and in intimate relationship.

To summarize:

Have enough compassion and kindness towards yourself to practice mastering the deluding power of fearful thinking on a daily basis.
Value life, value yourself as life itself, not as the smallness you think you are.
Increase and express this valuing by developing your ability and strength to watch thinking without being ruled or defined by thinking.
Practice releasing every form of self attack and self put down as you now realize they are all false — just thoughts thinking about other thoughts.
Through this simple practice, deepen the felt sense of your already free and complete being as you release yourself from the power of deluded thinking. Feel life flowing through you as you.

As always, sharing and questions are welcome!

Make Your Fear Bigger and Set Yourself Free – Jack Elias

Make Your Fear Bigger and Set Yourself Free
by  Jack Elias

When you experience unpleasant and painful emotions, the typical reaction is to
try to restrict them, stop them, or run away from those feelings.  Let’s be honest,
though — this doesn’t really work, does it? Surprisingly, one of the most effective
ways to control a negative emotion (such as anger or fear) is to give up controlling it.
My first Buddhist teacher, Shunryo Suzuki Roshi, had a wonderful, down-home way
of instructing us. One of his most memorable and oft-quoted teachings appears in
Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind:
“To give your sheep or cow a large, spacious meadow is the way to control him.”
Thousands of meditators have used this aphorism of Suzuki Roshi to remind themselves
to relax rather than contract when the mind gets wild with emotion.
During my hypnotherapy training many years ago, I discovered that Milton Erickson
understood this same principle. In fact, Erickson’s perspectives on how to work with
the mind were so closely in accord with Suzuki Roshi’s teachings, that I quickly began
to think of Milton Erickson as a “natural Buddhist.” If Erickson had met Roshi, he might
have thought Roshi was a “natural hypnotist”!
Let’s experiment with applying this principle of control  to fear. There are a couple of
different ways to give the sheep or cow (or tiger or dragon) of your fear a large pasture.
You can become mischievious in the midst of a fearful state — catch yourself shrinking,
and then expand yourself in a big belly laugh, “Ah, ha, ha! I love this fearful state!” Repeat
it louder. Repeat it again, this time even louder! Become the tiger and roar!
Or . . . if this is too theatrical for your taste, it’s fine to take a more imaginary and quieter approach:
Look at, or sense, your fear. It has a certain energy and presence right? This means it is an “object”
in your awareness. We usually think of emotions as being in our body or mind, so this is probably the
location of your fear. Right? Just feel where it is.
Now imagine expanding your fear. It’s not just inside your body anymore. Imagine the whole room
feeling this fear . . . then the whole house. Imagine the fear spreading through the whole neighborhood,
your entire city.
Intensify it! It continues to spread through the state, the country, the whole world. Now it spreads beyond
the world to the solar system. It is really on the move! It is engulfing Jupiter (thousands of times bigger than
the earth!) and moving on into the space beyond the solar system!
Your fear is spreading throughout the galaxy now. Take your time and really sense it spreading to all the millions
of stars and star systems and all the beings of whatever sort – innumerable in their multitudes.
What  happens to your fear when you make it bigger in this way? How do you feel when you let it expand into the
infinite universe, instead of trying to control it or push it down?
Many of my clients have found these techniques very empowering ways to work with fear and other disturbing emotions.
If you tried it out just now, please leave a comment and tell me how it went.
May we all flourish in peace and harmony. Roooaar!
